Hello r/aquaponics. I’ve been studying up on these systems a bit but I feel like I’m just starting to scratch the surface. Last season we had great success growing a few different vegetables in the top of our home made pond filter, I mean this stuff is impressive especially since we were going about it the probably the worst way possible. We lost a few plants after we had problems with roots getting in the way causing the filter to overflow.
The plan for this season is to not use the top of the filter for growing anything with deep roots. Instead I’ll be adding a grow bed about a foot deep in front of the pond. There will be another pump on a timer that will pump water from the pond to the bed 15 minutes out of every hour. I’ll have an air gap below the grow bed that will discharge back into the pond, this is in effort to eliminate root in the discharge line issues. I suppose the plan is to keep it simple and learn from the experience.
Do you see any glaring mistakes in this set up? One concern I have is about how high the water will rise in the grow bed. Will one full size pump (matches the pond pump size) be enough to get the water level high enough for the plants to be able to participate in the process? Or will I need to rig up something to slow the discharge from the bed? Thanks for your input, I appreciate any insight you can give on my plan from your experience. submitted by /u/80_PROOF
