Growing succulents and cacti in aquaponics system

Just wanted to share my experiments.

I am a biologist by nature who has been working with plants and fish/aquaponics systems for nearly 20 + years.

We built a long (20+ ft) shallow (2 to 3 inches) aquaponics tray system covered in plastic and connected to our backyard pond. It faces south so gets lots of sunlight every day and always has a shallow amount of water running through it before draining on the far end back to the pond via a pvc pipe underneath.

this is in zone 6B.

Over the last few years i have put countless kinds of succulents and cacti in this system a long with normal veggies and tropical plants like jasmine.

I have noticed that the succulents and cacti have absolutely blown up over the last few years since they never get the plant wet but always have water available to bottom water the roots. these are plants of all different sizes, from small rooted cuttings to much larger medium/large plants.

I have even been growing out baby Joshua Trees in this system. (After sprouting the seeds in a sunny shower stall over about 6 weeks last winter).

the growth rates have been incredible compared to controls of same plants grown outside the system. I know most people never think about growing these types of plants in aquaponics system, but i can confirm they do great in these systems !

Please LMK if you have questions, im always happy to discuss with similar minds and learn new things. submitted by /u/mynamesyow19
